Rural homes should get CCTV systems to prevent crime, says Inspector
Chief inspector James Sutherland believes CCTV systems are better at deterring crime than burglar alarms.

Homes in rural areas should have CCTV systems to prevent crime, according to a chief inspector for South Cambridgeshire Constabulary.
Chief inspector James Sutherland argues that CCTV systems are better than burglar alarms.
At a South Cambridgeshire Police panel meeting in Orchard Park, Cambridge, on Wednesday, CI Sutherland said: “One of the reasons why solving crime in rural areas is much harder than cities is the total absence of CCTV.
“You go into Cambridge city and there is really good, authority owned CCTV and there has been for a long time.”
“But there is none in South Cambridgeshire. If people can get CCTV then I would wholeheartedly recommend it.”
“It’s a great deterrent for burglars and a better deterrent than a burglar alarm.”
He added that CCTV should be accompanied by a “chain of security”, rather than people making isolated purchases.
“The overarching point I make about security is that home security only works when you chain things together.
“But a burglar alarm, or CCTV system, with a good physical system, such as good locks and lighting, has an accumulative effect on crime prevention.
“If it were me, I’d start with the good window locks and door locks, security lighting, timer switches and then once that’s done, consider burglar alarms and CCTV systems and more advanced security.”

We read a lot about unauthorised access to a variety of internet connected devices that are not secured properly. The ‘Internet of Things’ brings huge benefits to us in our daily lives but without proper configuration the very devices that are designed to help and assist us can cause problems.
A recent study revealed that the majority of internet connected devices, router and other assistive technology remains configured with the default security access, passwords and passkeys, all of which are readily available in the user manuals provided for the devices and made available online.
Wireless CCTV cameras are an excellent example of this, they need to balance the ease of use and setup with the need for security, many are just happy to configure their camera so it is visible from their smart phone or tablet while they are away but just how secure are they?
Stand alone CCTV cameras will need to connect to a third party service in order to announce their location to the viewer, this is so the app on the smart phone or tablet can locate the camera on the internet, this system is often configured incorrectly and armed with the default username and password for the camera the cyber intruder can gain access to the camera and see what the owner sees. Moreover, the cyber intruder can actually see when there is nobody home, notice patterns of behaviour and if inclined plan a visit.
Your CCTV cameras could actually be announcing when you are home and when you are not.
It’s crucial that these systems are configured correctly, installed correctly and secured agains all but appropriate access.
Systems from ABUS have got this in hand, their systems are backed by years of experience in all aspects of security and access control.

The Internet of Access Control
Internet of Things (IoT) technology has the potential to transform the way that Facilities Managers (FMs) manage buildings. It opens up a plethora of new choices for managing building services such as HVAC, lighting and, more recently, access control. But as Grant Macdonald, Managing Director of Codelocks, explains, FMs must be equipped to properly assess and adopt these new technology choices if they are to realise the potential benefits.
According to market analysts Navigant Research, the global market for building automation systems (BAS) is set for strong growth over the next few years1. This is being led by early adopters reaping the benefits of better building control – especially around energy management – improving comfort and convenience for occupants, reducing energy costs and ensuring compliance with new energy codes.
Importantly, Navigant identifies another key driver for smart buildings: the integration of smartphones into many human interactions within the world around us is shifting our expectations of the built environment.

ABUS Video Surveillance Kits: Camera and Digital Recorder Kits
ABUS offers complete systems for video surveillance. For all-round protection of your home, choose one of our cost-efficient digital recorder camera kits. Another special advantage: the components of the complete systems are perfectly coordinated with each other.
Video Surveillance for Your Home – Complete Systems from ABUS
Would you like to be able to pay a visit to your home to see if everything is OK, regardless of where you are in the world? Would you like to deter vandals, thieves and burglars and, if worse comes to worst, record them? Then our complete video surveillance systems are the right solution for you. They will provide you with inexpensive, convenient and user-friendly basis protection for your home, property or apartment.
Basic Digital Recorder Kits for Private Surveillance
With the ABUS digital recorder camera kits, you are relying on a compact and cost-efficient whole solution. In private homes, four camera channels are usually sufficient for surveillance of the most important areas. The recording runs continuously, according to a schedule, or on an event-controlled basis – triggered by motion detection or alarms.
Digital Wireless Transmission Sets: Surveillance Without Cables
Video surveillance was rarely so simple and reliable while simultaneously being able to be used at any time and being nearly self-explanatory. The motion detectors of the camera detect movement in the environment and transmit what is happening to the monitor, which can then save the signal to an SD card – while playback is simultaneously provided on the monitor. Even at night and with audio.
